Situated at the crossroads of some of the most important trade routes linking East and
West, Timisoara, the capital city of Timis county, is an important historical, economic,
financial, cultural and scientific center.
By its numerous parks, public gardens, squares and other green areas, Timisoara has
gained the name of ‘garden city’. The cultural stage is well represented: three important
theatres – Romanian, German and Hungarian, the Romanian Opera, the Philharmonic
and many other performance halls.
The population of Timisoara is of about 400,000 inhabitants, mostly Romanian.
The first documentary mention of Timisoara dates back to 1266, under the name of
Castrus Timisiensis. Maps have recorded it since 1339.
It must also be said that Timisoara was the first European city to be lit by electric street
lamps (12 November 1884).
